A diary only works if it feels safe to be honest in. Here's what actually happens to what you write, in plain language.
Every entry is encrypted
Your entries aren't stored as plain, readable text. Each one is encrypted using a key unique to your account, so even in the unlikely event of a database breach, nobody could read what you've written — not other users, and not someone who only gets access to the raw database.
Your own writing prompts, too
If you write your own custom prompts (see Settings → Your prompts), those are encrypted the same way your entries are — private to you, same as everything else you write.
Search still works
Encryption doesn't get in the way of finding your own entries — search and date filters on your dashboard work instantly, scoped only to your own account.
Deleting your account deletes your data
Once your account and its 21-day recovery window (see keeping your account secure) have passed, your diary entries are permanently removed, not just hidden.
